Description

Make bountiful offerings of food to the Supreme Healer Medicine Buddha and dedicate the merits to your dearly departed and ancestors for their better afterlife and future lives. Our sangha/pastors/team will make prayers and offerings at the Medicine Buddha Prayer Hall in Kechara Forest Retreat’s Relic Temple Memorial Hall, and dedicate the merits according to your wishes. The Memorial Food Offering Set C includes:

How it works
  • Vegetarian food will be freshly prepared at Magadha Sangmo Cafe in Kechara Forest Retreat.
  • The food will be offered at the main altar in the Medicine Buddha Prayer Hall on the day(s) of your choice, accompanied by traditional prayers.
  • Merits will be dedicated to your dearly departed according to your wishes.
  • A minimum notice period of three working day is required.
  • Please indicate your preferred offering date. If the dearly departed is recently deceased, please indicate their date of passing and we will calculate the 7th day accordingly.
  • All proceeds go towards the maintenance of the Medicine Buddha Prayer Hall and Kechara Forest Retreat.

Requesting a Service

  1. Set a positive intention before requesting the offering service. The purer your intention, the greater the merit generated.
  2. Select your desired offering quantity, size and style (where applicable).
  3. In the “Dedication” section: Provide the name of the person/entity the offering is dedicated to. You can also include a specific wish or request. Our sangha/pastors/team will dedicate the merits according to your wishes.
  4. In the “Sponsor” section: Provide the name of the sponsor (benefactor). This is optional; sponsors can choose to remain anonymous.
  5. After submitting your offering service request, rejoice and dedicate the merits you have generated.
  6. We will inform you by email once your offering has been fulfilled.

Making Food Offerings to the Deceased

The practice of making food offerings to the deceased has long been established in Asian culture. For instance, in the Chinese community, it is viewed as an expression of gratitude and filial piety to our dearly departed and ancestors. In the Janussoni Sutra, Buddha gave the following teaching on whether departed relatives can benefit from direct food offerings.

  • Food offerings can only reach the deceased if they are reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts.
  • Food offerings cannot reach the deceased if they are reborn in the other realms of existence (gods, devas, humans, animals, hell).
  • Even if the deceased is not reborn in the realm of the hungry ghosts, there are countless other ghosts who were our departed relatives in previous lives. They can benefit from food offerings.

Since we do not know for certain where our departed relatives and ancestors have taken rebirth, Buddhism encourages us to make offerings of food to the Buddhas (or sangha) and dedicate the merits to our dearly departed. This will be much more effective and beneficial in both the short and long term.
